plunger Brewing Guide
The coffee plunger, also known as a French press or cafetière, hasn’t changed much since its invention in 1929. Well engineered design and ease of use mean it is one of the most popular ways to brew coffee.
French Press, Coarse grind coffee, Water off the boil, Coffee: Water ratio 1:15 – 1:18 (this example uses 15g coffee to 250ml water)
Grind coffee on a coarse setting, then put it in a clean, dry plunger.
Bring water (preferably filtered) to a near boil (95 degrees), if it boils then just let cool a little. Pour enough water into the plunger to soak the grind so that the coffee expands and releases its gases. After 15 seconds pour in the rest of the water.
After 4 minutes plunge and serve.
Remember that any coffee left in the plunger will continue to extract and will therefore become more bitter over time.
